A DAY TRIP TO THE COAST: WATCH HILL, RI & A BIT OF CONNECTICUT
The coastline of Connecticut and Rhode Island ebbs and flows around almost too many idyllic New England towns to count. Here are just a few stops worthy of a little day trip.
ESSEX
Just a bit inland from the coast lies this nostalgic and historic American town along the Connecticut River. With quintessential New England architecture everywhere you turn, Essex is dubbed by many as the “perfect small town”.
GRISWOLD INN
Take a stroll down Main Street and stop in the quintessential Griswold Inn (“The Gris”) for a look around or a bite. Peak in The Griswold Inn Store - Goods & Curiosities across the street and grab a drink at Essex Coffee & Tea Company before heading out of town.
WATCH HILL
At the very tip of Rhode Island lies a tiny, idyllic town that encapsulates childlike joy in the simplest of pleasures. In fact, it is a place that holds magical childhood memories for me. Much of what Watch Hill has to offer is only open during the summer season, nonetheless, it’s still worth a visit.
OCEAN HOUSE
A stunning, historic hotel sprawling the coast in yellow grandeur. This one is not to be missed. Take the time to meander the grounds and grab a drink or casual bite at The Bistro or Secret Garden if you are visiting during the day. If you come in the evening, make a reservation for the highly recommended COAST.
ST. CLAIR ANNEX
Carousels and ice cream just go together. Luckily, right next to the Flying Horse Carousel sits this little ice cream and sandwich shop that has been in business for over 125 years.
FLYING HORSE CAROUSEL
The coolest little carousel at the end of the road. In fact, this merry-go-round is a National Historic Landmark. What makes it extra memorable for kids (or kids at heart) is the brass ring game. As you ride around on one of the outside horses, you get to grab a ring. Whoever gets the brass ring gets a free ride.
NAPATREE POINT CONSERVATION AREA
Along the peninsula at the very tip of Rhode Island lies a sandy stroll through this wildlife preserve with stunning ocean views on one side and Little Narragansett Bay on the other.
MYSTIC
Although Mystic can be overrun by tourists at times, it’s still worth a stop through town, at least for some incredible seafood at RED 36. I’m a big fan of their Lobster Cobb Salad.
