Ginger Turmeric Poached Pears with Vanilla Cardamom Yogurt & Cinnamon Maple Glaze

With cold and flu season upon us, I’ve found myself grating ginger and turmeric into everything I can—in this instance, poached pears.

These are warm and delicious for a cozy breakfast, and can also be served over ice cream for dessert.

YOU WILL NEED

Ginger Turmeric Poached Pears

  • 1/2 inch knob fresh turmeric, peeled

  • 1/2 inch knob fresh ginger, peeled

  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract

  • 1/4 teaspoon ground cardamom

  • 1/4 teaspoon ground cinnamon

  • 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg

  • 1/4 teaspoon fine sea salt

  • Pinch of ground black pepper

  • 4 pears, peeled

    Vanilla Cardamom Yogurt

  • 1 cup unsweetened coconut yogurt

  • 1/4 teaspoon ground cardamom

  • 1/4 teaspoon vanilla extract

  • 1 tablespoon maple syrup or honey, optional

    Cinnamon Maple Glaze

  • 1/4 cup maple syrup

  • 1/4 teaspoon ground cinnamon

  • 1/4 teaspoon salt

  • 1/4 teaspoon vanilla extract

TO MAKE

Ginger Turmeric Poached Pears

Use a fine grater to grate the turmeric and ginger in a small saucepan with 3 cups of water. Bring to a simmer. Whisk in the cardamom, cinnamon, nutmeg, salt, and pepper. Add the peeled pears and cover with a round piece of parchment paper to fit inside the saucepan. This is an optional method to keep the pears from oxidizing while poaching. Let simmer for about 10 minutes then turn the pears over, and continue to simmer for another 10-15 minutes, until the pears are fork tender.

Drain the pears with a fine mesh strainer and serve on top of Vanilla Cardamom Yogurt with a drizzle of Cinnamon Maple Glaze.

Serve right away and enjoy!

Vanilla Cardamom Yogurt

Pour the coconut yogurt into a small mixing bowl. Whisk in the cardamom, vanilla, and maple syrup.

Spoon the yogurt onto four serving plates to prepare for the Ginger Turmeric Poached Pears.

Cinnamon Maple Glaze

In a small pan, bring the maple syrup to a simmer. Whisk in cinnamon and salt. Continue simmering and whisking until the maple syrup is bubbly and easily coats the back of a metal spoon. Turn off the heat and whisk in the vanilla. The glaze will thicken as it cools. Pour over the Ginger Turmeric Poached Pears.
